J Cole’s Musical Career

Jermaine Lamarr Cole was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina on 28th January 1985. He is famed for being an American hip-hop artist and has involved with producing music for over a decade.

J. Cole received worldwide recognition for his debut mixtape- The Come Up; released in 2007. After the success of his debut, he was contacted by Rap connoisseur Jay-Z. He was signed onto his label Roc Nation. On this label he released his second mixed tape – The Warm Up (2009). In 2010 Friday Night Lights was released as his third mixed tape compilation.

J.Cole Album Releases and Success

His debut release album, Cole World: The Sideline Story came out in September 2011. It shot straight to number 1 on the US Billboard chart – it sold close to 220,000 copies within its first week. Amazingly, he captured a Best New Artist nomination at the 54th Grammy Awards.

His second album was entitled Born Sinner and was released mid-June 2013. It went straight to number two on the US Billboard chart; nonetheless, it made its way to number one in the months to follow.

J. Cole released his third album in early December of 2014 and it was entitled Forest Hills Drive. This album went straight in at number one and gave him his third number one album. The album was also met with positive critical acclaim and achieved Platinum status in a relatively short space of time.

Interesting Facts and Early Life

Cole was born in a United States Army base in West Germany. His father was a dedicated army professional of African-American origin and his mother is white. Cole moved back over to North Carolina at 8 months old where he was raised by his mother, cousin and his auntie.

Cole began rapping at 12 years old and seriously started considering it as a career at 15. He began practicing and rehearsing with a local group named Bomm Sheltuh, which already had rappers FilthE Ritch and Nervous Reck as members. It was at this time that music production became part of his persona and he began preforming under the stage name ‘Therapist’. There is also a J Cole tour scheduled for 2015, and if past history is anything to go by, then it should be a blast!
